DIRECTOR - Patty Jenkins
DURATION - 2hr 21mins
GENRE - Fantasy/Science Fiction \
RATING - 4/5
PLOT - Before she was the Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons. She was raised on a sheltered island paradise and trained to be an unconquerable warrior. When an American Pilot crashes on their shores and tells about a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat as she discovers her inner powers as "Wonder Woman".
REVIEW - After a few decades of being lost in the Hollywood hell with a plenty of false starts and a host of A-list actresses slated to play the coveted role, this one is the first bona fide, massive budget superhero movie to hit the big screen with a female actress in the lead role. The latest chapter of DC Universe, "Wonder Woman" already had colossal expectations to meet, but with the added pressure of lifting the DC Extended Universe out of the murk of it's dreary sub-par films, Gal Gadot had a lot of weight to carry on her shoulders. Fortunately, her first appearance in "Batman Vs Superman : Dawn of Justice" was well received, especially as Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman managed to stand her ground alongside two top comic book behemoths. And this time, the WONDER WOMAN continues to ride the wave in her own solo film, adding some much-needed confidence to the DC Extended Universe and she does complete justice to the iconic female superhero.
And most of the credit goes to director Patty Jenkins whose familiarity with constructing strong female characters, as seen in the Oscar-winning movie ‘Monster’, pays off here. The director's vision for this film is a blend of an uplifting as well as humorous outlook which has been sorely lacking in the DC Extended Universe till this point, infused with a strong sense of morale. Most importantly, it takes a distinctive stance on feminism, as highlighted in the relationship shared by Diana Prince and Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). Though Chris looks charismatic enough in the whole film. Trevor is well aware of the fact that Diana is far from the damsel in distress in need of a knight in shining armour to rescue her. Which results in building their connection out of mutual respect that plays very well on screen. Gal Gadot has an ability to embody the Amazon warrior princess. She is convincing as the naive yet steadfast fish-out-of-water, harking back to Christopher Reeve in the very first Superman film.
But, the film is hardly perfect, a few flaws in pacing and unevenly written secondary characters that resort to some stereotyping. Weak and shallow villains also infect "Wonder Woman", and become a particularly sore point in the third act. These issues tend to take you out of the thrilling experience but they don’t negate the positives listed so far, but lessen it's potential to reach new heights as a great Superhero movie.
FINAL WORDS - "Wonder Woman" is undoubtedly the strongest DC Universe outing till now. This one that will add a plenty of female fans to the franchise, and for all the right reasons. GO FOR IT!
