PLOT - Madhav Jha (Arjun Kapoor) is a rustic boy from Bihar, who falls in love with an upper class English speaking Delhi girl Riya Somani (Shraddha Kapoor). Riya wants to sing in bars in New York city, and Madhav is willing to understand his relationship status with Riya. Will the Bihar boy and Delhi girl cross the half way mark?
REVIEW - After Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain and Hamari Adhuri Kahani, Mohit Suri comes up with Half Girlfriend, a loyal adaptation from Chetan Bhagat's novel. Madhav Jha (Arjun) clearly has a lot of problem when it comes to speaking English. The fun bit comes when the Simrao boy gets struck by a thunderbolt when he spots the Delhi dame. He can barely speak a smattering of English and she belongs to a rich family, speaks english fluently, which impresses Madhav. It's pretty understandable, they find an escape in basketball and music. Before long, Madhav's one sided love for Riya becomes a fatal attraction. His colleague, Shailesh (Vikrant Massey) warns him of the danger of driving into a one way street, but his Madhav pays no heed. The frustrating bit repeated warnings fall on deaf ears as Madhav is head over heels in love with Riya. The frustrating bit for Madhav and the audience is that Riya is commitment phobic. Her half girlfriend logic seems non-negotiable and stops you from investing in her halfway through the film. When Madhav tries to get physical, Riya storms out of the room and stops talking to him, she even drops out of the college. In no time, she ties the knot with her childhood friend Rohan, who is a filthy rich NRI guy. But destiny had some other plans as few years later, Madhav stumbles upon a divorced Riya and his hope rekindles.
The first half breezes through but the second half seems a little bit stretched. Arjun Kapoor is good, lives and breathes the character of Madhav Jha and keeps the film going, but he needs to work on his expressions, which sometimes seem repetitive. Shraddha Kapoor is dignified and graceful, but she could have done more better, she has the potential of doing it. Vikrant Massey justifies his character, impresses in the role of a loving and caring friend. Rhea Chakraborty's cameo may bring smiles on many faces. Half Girlfriend is amateurish at times, this is definitely not the film we expect from Mohit Suri, who boasts films like Murder 2, Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain. Arijit Singh's Main Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga and Ash King's Baarish adds magic to the film, while rest of the songs are simply redundant. The Bill Gates portion could have been better.
FINAL WORDS - Half Girlfriend isn't a much boring film, but yes One Time Watchable!
