Plot – Since his early days in Chandni Chowk, Roshan Kalra (Saif Ali Khan) had an obsession for foodstuff, to a great extent that he left home to chase it. Now in his forties, Roshan is a much-admired chef in restaurant at New York with three Michelin stars. On the other hand, he is also a divorcee with a son Armaan a.k.a Arry (Svar Kamble) who is living with his ex-wife Radha (Padmapriya).
Off-late, he has lost his inborn obsession for cooking, treating it more as an occupation, and has turned into a person with more aggressive nature. His newly found aggression is put on show, Roshan hits a restaurant patron. He lands in lockup and afterward loses his occupation too. On his friend’s idea, he goes to Kerala to form a union with his son. As he patches up his relationship with Arry, it also gives him a chance to get back his enthusiasm for the art of cooking. How this reignited obsession takes Roshan and his son on a life-changing cross-country trip from Kerala to Delhi forms the crux of the story.
Review – Chef is an official adaptation of Jon Favreau’s Chef. This time Bollywood has come up with more than a well-brought-up remake of a Hollywood movie. And yes, it’s not a frame to frame copy of the original. Despite the fact that it uses the fundamental theme and the character frames, director Raja Krishna Menon has made sure that his altered copy stands separately from the original. Furthermore he does so, by focusing more on the protagonist’s relationship with his son and ex-wife, somewhat than just cooking which was more in center of attention in the original. And it actually works here, because we love dramas. Food does play a truly important role here. The main strength of the film lies within scenes where Roshan and his son Arry bond over food, with the former realizing what has been absent in his past days. As they build up their relationship over tomato chutney and rotizza, we also enjoy in their father-and-son bonding.
The picturesque locales of Kerala add an energizing feel to the movie. Director Raja Krishna Menon has done full justice as well as fair dealing with Chef that no Bollywood movie has tried before. From union troubles to mouth-watering food made in toddy shops there, for the first time, a Hindi movie give you an idea about that Kerala is more than just coconut trees and backwaters. The cinematography by Priya Seth deserves a specal mention.
Unlike the original, the wit in Chef is more understated however it wrings out a giggle from. The film gives a special reference to Dil Chahta Hai here. Performance wise, Saif Ali Khan plays down himself which works in favour of his character on the whole. Malayalam actress Padmapriya is excellent as the self-assured single mom. Svar Kamble makes a good debut and is well-brought-up. Milind Soman is wonderful, while Chandan Roy Sanyal and Dinesh P Nair are jovial.
Unfortunately, the film has a few dull moments and the climax part is weak, looks similar to the original movie, the film lacks pace after first half, but Saif’s comeback to making food makes you forget everything.
Final Words – Chef is a superior adaptation of the Hollywood flick, which does fair dealing to it’s theme. It can be your weekend watch with family. Don’t miss this delicious fun filled road trip!

Music Review –
The music album of Chef features 6 songs titled as ‘Shugal Laga Le’,‘Tere Mere’,‘Banjara’,‘Tan Tan’,‘Khoya Khoya’,‘Darmiyaan’. However, ‘Tere Mere’,‘Banjara’,‘Khoya Khoya’,‘Darmiyaan’ have been topping the charts so far, and are ruling my playlist too. The makers came up with refreshing music and we’re in love with it. Box Office Prediction –
Chef will be releasing on around 1500 to 2000 screens. And with the release of Varun Dhawan’s ‘Judwaa 2’, the box office got a much needed leisure. And to some amount ‘Judwaa 2’ will stay as competition to ‘Chef’ as the Varun Dhawan starrer has done an extraordinary business and it has been loved by the masses. But ‘Chef’, being a new release is having an edge over ‘Judwaa 2’. The Saif Ali Khan starrer is dependent on content and the word of mouth. If everything goes fine, then the film can easily rake in Rs. 4 - 5 crore on day 1, and can easily earn Rs 15 crore by the weekend.
